The Cost of a New Fence in Calgary, Alberta

 In blog

Looking for some information on the cost of a new fence in Calgary?  Whether you’ve got a big acreage in Bearspaw or you just bought a fixer-upper in Bridlewood, one of the most important things for a homeowner to invest in is a strong, reliable fence. These keep pets in, unwanted visitors out, and serve as a privacy barrier towards the road or your neighbours.

However, building a new fence isn’t as simple as picking up some 2x4s and pounding them into your yard. Here’s what you need to know about the price of building a fence in Calgary.

What Affects the Price of my Fence?

Many factors can affect the final price of your fence project: the material used, the size of your lot, the topography, and the style of the build should all be considered. Even different communities within the city tend to have higher or lower prices, which is especially noticeable between old and new neighbourhoods.

This is because different communities have different sizes of lots, and in newer areas, the houses are usually closer together. For example, New Brighton in the south or Nolan Hill up north typically have “zero lot lines”, where the houses may only be 4 feet apart (in other neighbourhoods, this is doubled). Due to this, the backyard fences don’t start until they are clear of the house, which is further back from the street and closer to the back of the lot. This means shorter fence runs around the backyard only, and less expense overall.

The Cost of Different Fence Materials

Building a Fence with Pressure-Treated Wood

Costing about $50-75$ per lineal foot and typically made of spruce, pine, and fir (SPF), pressure-treated wood has been specially made in order to better withstand the elements of Calgary. Hot sun, freezing cold, brutal hail, and chinook winds can be harsh on wood, and this added treatment is crucial to long-lasting fence protection (in addition to regular maintenance, like cleaning and painting).

Building a Fence with Cedar

Cedar is a popular choice for fences in Calgary, though when it comes to the cost of a new fence it’s a bit more expensive than SPF, at about $60-$85 per lineal foot. Full of natural oils that deter insects and rot, cedar is an easily paintable or stainable material that stands up well to the elements while still leaving room for style and matching to your overall colour scheme.

The variation in the cost of these materials comes down to style – whether you want full privacy, a pet barrier, a picturesque garden fence, a lattice, or any other style you might think of. In Calgary, a typical lot is about 60 feet of fence between neighbours, so an SPF fence would be about $3,600 per side and a cedar fence would be about $4,500.

However, this varies depending on factors mentioned above, like the terrain and the layout of your lot. Without a full, on-location quote, it’s impossible to say for sure. Exact measurements would be needed, as well as a discussion of what the final result should look like.
